I deposit Items there, if no one buys do i lose item?
My 1st try with Auction House i created an auction for light Leathers, but made a mistake on the prices. When I cancelled auction i didnt recieve item back
When you throw an item on the Auction house, if it doesn't sell, it gets mailed back to you, along with the small amount of deposit money you put in with the item. This way you don't really loose anything if your auction doesn't sell. But when it does sell, an hour later, you'll get mail with the money from the auction and the deposit price back, but the Auction House will deduct a small fee (about 5% generally) of the amount that you made for their own profits.
The item doesn't just show back up in your inventory if you cancel an auction, it is mailed back to you, so you have to go to a mail box and retrieve it. Also, I'm not sure, since I don't cancel auctions all that much, but its possible that it takes time for it to be sent back to you.
When you put an auction up, everyone who looks in the Auction house on your side (alliance or Horde, depending on which one you are) can see your auction, as long as they happen to be searching for that item (or through the set of items that it belongs in).
There is a lot to know about auction houses so I would go out there and google it and read up.
But to answer your questions. There are auction houses for each faction in each of its major cities. The items you post for auction can be viewed by every one who is at any one of those auction houses no matter which of them you were at when you posted the item. Those auction houses are set up as alliance or horde only. There are also auction houses that are nuetral and either faction can post, view, and bid on items.
If some one buys your item you pay the AH 5% (unless its a horde AND alliance AH you pay 15%) of whatever you sold it for and the gold is mailed to you with a note about how much money you made and what you sold.
If the auction doesnt sell for any reason at all: you cancel it, or it expires with out a buyer, you get the item back in the mail.
At least thats the way it is supposed to work. If you didnt get the item back in the mail you should report it. You may have experienced some kind of bug.

Reason: Incorrect Info
Using an AH add on also makes the AH alot easier to handle.
I use auctioneer and I find it most helpful as it gives me the average prices of items, so I can see what I should be selling gear for if I want to make a profit.
Takes the hard work out of it!!
I use the AH....a lot.
I actually farm for primals to sell and make money....so the AH is my friend
I'd just like to echo what all these guys are saying and also recommend auctioneer as an addon, I don't have it installed currently but it does definitely help in making money on the AH by knowing what is the best price to list things at, etc.
I know the post is getting a little older but buying and reselling primals now in the new economy doesn't work.
With that said yes using auctioneer is a must have addon. I wouldn't dare buy and sell on the auction house without it.
Some tips to make more money on the auction house
Stop throwing up 10 of any item. I see this everyday and it does nothing to help you out. It devalues the item makes it seem like to the buyer you have a million of them, and it encourages bad economy. Plus you risk not selling the entire lot which costs you in auction fees, and so your relist..sell again and by the time you did sell it all you lost profit..
So only list 2-3 of any given thing, it not only helps save you listing fees, but it keeps the economy stable.
Next I would say quit underbidding like a noob. There is no reason to underbid so much, then the next guy does it and before you no it the price is way undermarket. By all means do that if you want a guy like me to buy it all up a cheaper costs..sit on the inventory, wait for the opportunity to sell it higher and make the money..Underbid by silver or 2 is fine, that's all I do..and if the going rate is dropping, don't sell nothing says you have to wait until the price goes up then sell it..
I remember a guy that was selling these horn of winter glyphs for 15g, he made both mistakes and through up 20 glyphs at this price..guess what I did I bought them ALL...then I get this pm in the game saying thanks...so I replied no thank you...because I was selling these at the time for 32g a piece...he threw more up thinking he had a winner...I bought them again....then re-listed at my price and I only put 1 up not 10..that's a waste..after a day or so he could no longer compete against me and he was out of that market, and I made a ton of gold.
