So you are going to play World of Warcraft. Once you set up install and log in what do you do now? Well here is some advice to get you started:
1. Read the book that came with the game and choose a class or two that you would like to play.
2. Think about what name you would like and have several choices as there is a lot of people and your first choice may be taken.
3. Talk to your friends first to find out what server they are on so you can play with them. or Pick the server that's right for you. You can have multiple toons on multiple servers so you can hardcore pvp, do the RP thing or join in some end game goodness.
4. Once you know your way around make a level one character and walk him to a major city and park it at the mailbox - this is your bank toon. It will be your seller of goods, holder of extra crap and saver of space and time.
5. Quest. Surprisingly enough if you read the full quest and follow what it says you will complete it and be rewarded in money, items and drops to help you on your way.
6. Gray items- pick up everything you find- sell grays to vendors - there is alot of money to be made in selling those useless items to NPC's in the game. Thats what they are there for.
7. Use the Auction house wisely - if you don't "need" it don't buy it. Look up the item on thottbot or wowhead and find where it drops - this way you make extra gold selling grays that drop in that area as well as experience and maybe there's a quest there to help you.
8. Play and level with your friends - its no fun "running" low levels through the game or "catching" them up on quests. Look for others who are on the same quest and around your level to group with.
9. Join a guild. this way you have friends to chat with while soloing, people to group up with and answer questions in a more friendly matter then you may get in general chat.
I think the best option to really get started is to seperate the idea that your bank toon must feed your main character. This is a hard habit to break, since it feels logical, but it actually wastes your time. Because after awile the game changes focus and it becomes all about feeding your bank toon..and not your bank toon feeding your main.
Learn to seperate the game into 2 games. Your main character who plays the game..
And your bank toon who worries about making gold. I would disagree with suggestion of picking up grey items. This is a total waste of time. It fills up your bag space and you'll soon find yourself running constatly back to town just to vendor off the trash, which wastes time..this time is better spent leveling.
In the same theme. Do not fall victim to the idea finish one quest run back to town, hand it in and do another. Again this wastes time. That 10 min run back to town could have been used to finish another quest. Try and finish large blocks of quests so that when it is necessary to run back to town..it's ding...ding...ding...empty bags, move on.
